You need to "rip" your CD+G disks by using the free CDGBackup software. QMidi cannot currently display CDG graphics directly from CD+G disks. QMidi will play the audio tracks but no video, is there anyway I can get the video to play? Since this tool is no longer available on macOS Catalina, third-party software must be used to "modernize" these videos. In OS X Mavericks through macOS Mojave, QMidi could still convert eligible files into a readable format using the "QT Modernizer" Apple tool. On 64-bit systems, Apple replaced QuickTime with the new AVFoundation framework, which supports only a reduced set of modern high-quality video codecs.

there are lots and lots of ways to skin this particular cat.After updating to the 64-bit version of QMidi (2.8), some movie files can no longer be played. Under Logic 9 it has backing tracks, but I don't know whether it also has MIDI sequencing. Mainstage under Logic 8 did not have the timeline / backing track stuff, but it could do splits and layers and so on just fine. If your songs have a timeline and backing tracks, you can even program the part / layer / split switching right into the timeline, and the changes will happen along with the backing tracks. I've used drum pads on a Fantom to control parts before, for example. and set up some buttons or knobs or pads on your controller to send those events.
You can for example dedicate one MIDI channel to switching parts / instruments / etc. Ableton is pretty flexible about letting you map MIDI events to any kind of thing. You can also use separate tracks (channel strips) for this, and switch between them with MIDI events or the keyboard. The rack can implement splits and layers and so on. You can create an instrument rack for each song or each set, and use a MIDI event to select between the instruments in the rack. If you do this in Ableton, there are lots of choices of how you organize things.
I have never used MIDI with PT so I can't comment on that one. Mainstage (part of Logic) is also able to do what you describe, and the newest version (with Logic 9) has even more features. I use Ableton for this purpose it's the best thing I've seen for this. You need some kind of host program to stand between your MIDI controller and the virtual instruments, to organize which sounds are currently playing on what channels and how the notes and control events from your controller are sent to the software instruments. Should I run the instruments as standalone instruments, or should I wrap them up with something like pro tools (which I know the best) or ableton (the least)? Can I send the same midi channel to both instruments & control the volumes of each sound? What about if I then want to switch over to an organ sound? What about if I want to create a split, and only send the left hand to reason. say I'm using akoustic piano for my acoustic piano sounds (duh?), but I want a layered pad playing underneath it via reason. I'd like to quickly change between different instruments AND I'd like to use combinations of those instruments at the same time.

Assuming I have a full featured controller (leaning toward the CME vx7), what is the best way to have things set up so that I can do the following: I'll primarily be running NI Komplete 5, and Reason 4. What I'm trying to do is run 1 keyboard into a macbook that is running multiple VI's. and I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but, I haven't had much success with my searches.
